Dortmund rose
Dortmund – many gardeners cherish a highly prolific and trouble-free hybrid, Kordes. The slightly cup-shaped, non-double flowers have wavy petals and reach 8-9 cm in diameter. Each bright red flower has a focal point – a white eye encircling a cluster of golden stamens. The fragrance is very weak. Dortmund showcases an impressive display of large, attention-grabbing floral clusters in late spring, followed by repeat waves of bloom throughout the season. Fading flowers turn into large, round, orange hips. The stems are very thorny. The foliage is small, glossy, and dark green. It is winter-hardy (Zone 4). It can be grown as a shrub if space allows, but it is often planted as a climbing rose. It reaches 250-300 cm when supported in a cold climate, and in warmer regions, it can grow up to 10 meters. Regular deadheading after the first bloom is required to encourage more flowers later, though it can be time-consuming and challenging due to the thorny stems. Disease problems are minimal. Plant a low, bushy plant at the base to hide the “bare feet.”
