How to plant roses
Hardy Roses for Cold Climates and Frost-Prone Areas
Essential tips for rose planting
01.
Choose the Right Location
Pick a sunny spot with 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Ensure the area has good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
02.
Prepare the Soil
Use well-draining Soil rich in organic matter. Roses prefer slightly acidic Soil with a pH of 6.5. Mix in compost or well-rotted manure before planting for better nutrition.
03.
Planting Depth and Space
Dig twice as wide and deep as the rose’s root ball. Position the graft union (the swollen part where stems meet roots) about 1-2 inches below the soil level in cold climates and at the soil level in warmer climates. Leave 18–36 inches between each plant for proper growth.
04.
Watering After Planting
Water deeply after planting to eliminate air pockets and settle the Soil. Maintain consistent moisture but avoid waterlogging.
05.
Mulch and Support
To retain moisture and suppress weeds, add a layer of mulch (2–3 inches) around the base of the plant. If growing climbing roses, install trellises or stakes for Support early on to avoid disturbing roots later.
